Announcing: The Daytona Ultimatum, A Thematic Sale Dedicated To The Legendary Rolex Chronograph
GENEVA – 13 DECEMBER 2017 – Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo is proud to announce an extraordinary themed sale dedicated to the world’s most sought after and collectible wristwatch – the Rolex Daytona. This tightly curated sale, to take place in Geneva on 12 May 2018, will offer an extremely limited selection of the finest, rarest, and best-preserved Rolex Daytona wristwatches known to exist. Consequently the Daytona Ultimatum auction will be a historic, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for astute collectors across the globe.
Launched in 1963 and continually produced to the present day, Rolex’s Cosmograph Daytona is an icon – a legendary chronograph wristwatch that has inspired several generations of watch enthusiasts. Designed for motorsport, its introduction followed Rolex’s sponsorship of the annual 24 Hours of Daytona endurance race held since 1962 – known today as the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Over the years, the Daytona has gracefully evolved, with subtle changes and functional improvements, but its main aesthetic features have remained consistent due to the strength of its initial design. While few references of the Daytona have been introduced, the flurry of subtle changes seen over the course of five decades captivates the minds of collectors, with very rare and exclusive examples still being discovered today.
With its timeless style, superb proportions, and racing pedigree, it is widely recognised as the ultimate sports watch. The appeal of the model has only grown in recent years, with multiple world record results, including Phillips’ sale of Paul Newman’s own Rolex „Paul Newman” Daytona that achieved a world record for the highest result ever for a wristwatch sold at auction.
Phillips looks forward to sharing more details in the months ahead.
